Our roots go back to Germany, where we restored antiques and became masters in the manufacture and finishing techniques of the “Old World.” When we came to the US, we applied our knowledge of time-proven methods and coupled them with technological advances in materials and machinery.
We prefer to utilize classic designs, because they have withstood the test of time. This means there is something about them that transcends temporary trends and fads. The delicate relationship between proportions, shapes and spaces speaks to our souls.
Our philosophy is to build every piece to its potential. Every piece should strive to maximize function, beauty and, of course, quality.
We are a small boutique manufacturer of custom furniture. Our team consists of highly trained and talented craftsmen who have dedicated decades of their lives to learn and perfect their skills.
Being different is not the goal in itself, but if the quality of our work makes us different, that’s something to be proud of.
Our Methods
While we take advantage of the efficiencies of modern machines and technologies, nothing brings wood to life like the touch of the artisan’s hand.
We use time-proven methods of joinery like dovetail and mortise and tenons. These are the joints that have held heirloom furniture together for hundreds of years.
After we hand-plane every surface we use scrapers and chisels to recreate years of natural aging and distressing.
Our master finishers continue the aging process, by applying layers of glaze and polish to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain and recreate decades of accumulated patina.
Even when distressing and aging is not the desired look, we carefully select the lumber for its grain patterns and then use the finishing process to bring out the natural beauty of the wood.
Our finishes go back to classical training in the Old World. We have long since left the shellac, pumice and buffing pad behind. We now use more modern finish materials that are more resistant to the everyday rigors of modern life while still providing the brilliance and clarity necessary to showcase the natural beauty of the wood grain.
